Great news, vegetarian (and those who just enjoy the vegetarian dishes) blog fans! Holland America Line has introduced a new alternative, vegetarian-only menu, as well as 30 new vegetarian dishes to our main dining room menu. Our own Master Chef Rudi Sodamin has designed an exclusive 22-dish vegetarian and vegan menu that highlights vegetables and other naturally healthy ingredients.

The alternative menu includes a full range of appetizers, salads, soups and main entrées, and is available upon request at no extra cost for lunch and dinner in the main dining room.

Some dishes include Portobello Mushroom and Chipotle Quesadillas, Vietnamese Vegetable Spring Rolls, Curried Vegetable Empanadas, Spicy Lentil and Garbanzo Salad, Sweet and Sour Vegetable Tempura, Vegetable Jambalaya, Grilled Vegetable and Tofu Kebobs, and Baked Cheese Polenta with Mushrooms and Artichoke Hearts.

In addition to the new vegetarian-only menu, 30 new vegetarian dishes will be added to the main dining room menu. These offerings also will be featured as a second vegetarian option in the casual Lido buffet during lunch. Additionally, every dinner menu will now offer guests the option of one appetizer, one soup or salad, and at least one vegetarian entrée each evening, increasing the total number of vegetarian options on board to 52 delectable dishes.

Some of the newly expanded vegetarian selections on the main dining room menu include Corn and Zucchini Pancakes served with Southwest-style cous cous salad, Asparagus and Zucchini Torte with wild rice and sun-dried tomato coulees, Carrot and Parmesan Risotto topped with a lemony arugula salad and crispy carrot ribbons, and Grilled Eggplant and Bell Pepper Masala braised in yogurt with Indian spices and served with coconut-pistachio basmati rice.

Bon appetit!

  1. The new vegetarian menu sounds terrific and the calorie count would be even better!
    Thanks.

  2. My husband and I have traveled on various Holland American Lines an I find it very difficult eating in the Lido unless I only want a salad. I am allergic to garlic and I find that everything in the Lido menu is cooked with garlic even the soups!. I did have better luck in the formal dinning room but even then I had to preorder every night for the next night. I’m a lover of vegetables and HOPEFULLY can look forward to the vegetarian menu on the Statendam in April 2013. So far I’ve had no luck in that area.

  3. Very disappointed with new vegan menu. The main reason we cruise HAL is for the traditional menu we have become accustomed to. We have 32 sailing days with HAL in the 6 months, and this announcement has only given us new doubt and concern.

  4. (This is a P.S. to the comment I posted earlier about my husband’s intolerance of dairy products.)

One of the big and very helpful changes Holland America could make would be to adjust its standard recipes for all breads, eliminating milk or butter. This would mean that almost ALL passengers could eat them, regardless of whether vegetarian/vegan/lactose intolerant/all dairy intolerant.

(By the way, 2 years ago when we sailed on the Princess line we learned they already followed this no-dairy-ingredients rule for all of their made-on-board breads.)

  5. I am delighted with the expanded menu and the inclusion of vegan dishes. My last cruise on the Rotterdam demonstrated more and better vegetarian fare. Thanks.

  6. Hi I will be sailing with you in Sept. for 2 weeks up to Alaska. I am so looking forward to our trip. I am on very special meal plan. It is called “Paleo” I am sure you have heard of this before…basically no starches and no artifical fats. I am hoping to stick to the plan on my trip. Any sugestions?

  7. Have you thought about people who are gluten intolerant? Do you have gluten free items readily available in the main dining room?

  8. Looking forward to sampling the new Vegetarian menu. We’re not total vegetarians but very much enjoy meatless dishes. See you in November.

  9. Pls., do NOT forget that some people cannot eat pepppers and very exotic spices!
There also should be some vegetarian meals more in line with North European (Scandinavian) tastes!
For the Non-Vegetarians (but not much meat), there should be a greater variety in seafood! Also at lunch (not at breakfast!).

  10. Thank you for your concern for those who are vegetarian/vegan. It just makes the cruise all the more exciting to sample new vegetarian meals. I will now look forward to a easier time to make a selection each day. There are many more of us out there!!!!!!!

  11. Pat, we had the same trouble our 28-day Baltic Explorer. We kept having to explain to the dining room manager that fish and chicken broth didn’t belong on the vegetarian menu! To Holland America, I thoroughly appreciate your efforts to accommodate us vegetarians, but having already tried the vegetarian menu items on my last cruise to Alaska last month, please understand that you really need a vegetarian gourmet chef to help you make this food better. Much of it was bland. It’s also important to realize that not everyone eats mushrooms, and many are actually allergic to them. I, myself, cannot stand them, and unfortunately I have found that mushrooms are a very common substitution for meat, and I can see that this is happening on your new vegetarian menu as well. While we’re talking about menus, may I put in a suggestion to train your chefs and all your food staff about gluten-free diets. More and more Americans are become gluten intolerant because of the higher gluten content in genetically modified wheat products. I would love to take my dad on a cruise with me, but besides eggs, there is not a single breakfast entree that he can eat as a vegetarian with celiac disease, and who wants to eat eggs every day, you know? Thanks!

  12. Dear Pat Hall,

You should be happy you lost weight on a cruise…something alot of people wish they could say :)

  13. Congratulations on new vegetarian menu choices. I’m sure the menu will improve and broaden as time passes and more experience and feedback comes. Your chefs are great and we always enjoy the food. Looking forward to trying new choices on next cruise. Bernie Christensen

  14. This is excellent news! So looking forward to our next cruise and less stress in deciding what we can eat.

  15. In my experience your vegetarian dishes have been dominated by Asian-related food and spices including Mexican, for example. It appears that the chefs see “vegetarian” as food with curry or tofu or ginger. Of course, I’ve been able to order nice pasta dishes but I don’t recall seeing, for example, vegetarian quiches or souffles or casseroles (without these spices). Just look at your menu to see whether the items are primary Asian, Mexican etc. and with sharp spices. I suggest that that the chefs seek to broaden their understanding of “vegetarian” beyond highly spiced foods. Please understand that I’m aware of the fact that many passengers, maybe most, prefer the food categories that you offer.

  16. Thank you it is going to be an extra special treat to have some great veggie choices!! I am hoping there will be no fish or meat of any kind on the vegertarian menu because we do not eat any of those products or their by-products. we are truly looking forward to a wonderful dinning experince onboard. All three of us going once again thank you for your vegan and vegetarian menu.

  17. Thank you so much! While not a total vegetarian, I do love lunch and dinner vegetarian options…can’t quite let go of my morning ham ‘n eggs – too many years on the farm, I suppose.

  18. We will welcome more vegan choices, but would like to see the chefs cut back on the amount of sugar used in recipes. The last two cruises were overloaded with sweets rather than fruits and vegetables!
Would love to see the chefs lose weight and be better examples for the guests.

  19. I am neither Vegan nor complete Vegetarian, but some days I do not want to eat meat, chicken or fish. I shall be most delighted to have vegetarian dishes from which to choose at dinner time. Thanks for giving us these options.

  20. So happy to hear that you have added more vegetarian entree’s to your menu, we are so looking forward enjoying your new dishes!
    thanks so much

  21. Sounds great! How about some more ides for gluten free diets as well. Have had problems in Pinnacle Grill the last few cruises as have friends of ours one of whom got violently ill after eating at the Pinnacle Grill on the Nieuw Amsterdam/ Did not leave a good impression and we felt badly as we had recommended HAL cruises as being aware of this.

  22. I understand that we have been assigned to the late dinner but would be transferred to early
dinner if an opening comes up. I’m really not happy about having to eat dinner at 9pm. Hoping
you will be able/willing to move us (me and a friend) to the earlier dinner. Thank you.

  23. Although we are not vegetarian/vegans we do appreciate the new menu options. Kudos to HAL for
your ability to satisfy so many varied requests!! We are looking forward to our December cruise and
the wonderful meals you serve….THANK YOU.

  24. Myself and my wife are vegetarian please include in your vegetarian menu nagaraj nanjappa and padmini nagaraj thanking you nagaraj nanjappa

  25. Continue thinking forward! Adding Vegetarian is great, adding options that are truly Vegan, gluten or dairy free all welcome additions, too. Keep up the good work HAL!

  26. I appreciate your desire to include more vegetarian and vegan options. Our family is vegan. As others might have mentioned. We do not eat ANY animal products. That means no fish, eggs, or any dairy!! Please do not think that you can use beef, chicken or fish broth or sauce. There are wonderful vegan chefs all over the U.S. that know how to make a whole meal that is tasty, without being too spicy. I would also appreciate almond, rice, or coconut milk being offered. Many of us do not love soy milk.
A salad does not fill us up, and we hope that we can find plenty of vegan options in all of the dinning venues. We look forward to sailing with you in Feb.

  27. Thank you for this! I have kidney problems & have had to give up a lot of protein in my diet. These new vegetarian & vegan menu choices look delicious & I can’t wait to try them out in November on our next cruise!! Thank you Chef Rudi!!

  28. This new menu was great news to us, since finding something suitable for a fish & seafood allergic person, with strong gluten and dairy intolerance was quite a challenge in our first 2 cruises.

The only food I could eat was at the asian or salad bars. More tasty varieties would be appreciated and please, let us add the salt ourselves.

  29. Great! That is good news for vegetarians. We are looking forward to enjoy your sailing and your delectable meals! We will be there soon. Thanks Holland America Cruise Line.

  30. Sometimes things that are vegetarian are extra spicey hot.
They do not have to be spicey hot to be flavorful. The
    vegies themselves provide the flavor.
    Thanks.

  31. Hi, can you order food from the vegan/vegetarian menu AND the regular one? Occasionally we like some fish but some of these sound wonderful! We are vegetarians.

  32. I am sailing with you on the 5th of September/12 from Rome. I am allergic to eggs. Is it possible to accomodate that? Let me know how to communicate this allergy to Holland America.
    Thank You
    Louise Browitt

  33. Where can I find the recipe for the Vietnamese Vegetable Spring Rolls that are served on the ship? They are so good and I want to make them at home.

  34. hi ,
i am from india traveling with holland america for the 1st time through ms zuiderdam ship.
