The officers and crew of ms Maasdam welcomed Maine Governor Paul LePage aboard when the ship docked at Bar Harbor on July 19. Governor LePage was accompanied by officials from the port and the local tourist board.
At a welcome ceremony in the Crow’s Nest lounge, Captain Arno Jutten thanked the governor and his entourage for the hospitality Maine has continuously shown to guests and crew members of Holland America Line. The governor, in turn, thanked Captain Jutten for the numerous visits made by HAL ships and for HAL’s commitment to helping sustain the livelihood of some 500 small local businesses in the state – particularly lobster fishermen. Fresh Maine lobster is purchased numerous times during Maasdam’s Canada/New England season port calls.
Governor LePage presented Captain Jutten with a timepiece to commemorate the event and to honor HAL during its 140th anniversary year. Captain Jutten presented the governor with a plaque and a ship model of Maasdam.
Later, the group enjoyed lobster at a lunch in the Pinnacle Grill, followed by a tour of the ship and the bridge.
