With the introduction of Holland America Line’s “On Location” program, onboard classes and demonstrations by local artists and professionals allow guests to familiarize themselves with the cultures they’ll be visiting around the world. “On Location” means that Holland America Line guests can learn to tango on the way to Argentina, take a cooking class taught by a Caribbean chef or taste fresh mussels off Canada’s Prince Edward Island.
On cruises that explore Australia and New Zealand, “On Location” will be in full swing. Guests who want to learn more about the culinary side of the continent can learn how to make Lamington Cakes (a traditional Australian treat made of little sponge cakes coated in chocolate and grated coconut) and New Zealand Salmon Wellington at cooking demonstrations in the Culinary Arts Center. An Outback-style barbecue will feature Australian and New Zealand favorites, and a Saturday Market/Australian Breakfast will showcase various stations featuring local foods.
Australia produces some of the finest wines in the world, and wine connoisseurs can learn more about the local vintages at wine tastings and an on-deck wine event.
Location guides will be on each voyage giving presentations about the various ports of call and discussing highlights of the region that are not to be missed during the cruise.
The onboard entertainment program gets a touch of Down Under with special theme parties and exiting didgeridoo performances with the ships’ resident band.
On select cruises, the enrichment program is enhanced with local experts and personalities such as Greg Cornelsen, a former pro-rugby player; George Friend, a South Pacific and Australian historian and war specialist, and Kelli Lemass, a lawyer and former journalist, who will give presentations and speak about topics pertaining to the region. Bruce Rodgers, a didgeridoo player, will be onboard select sailings to give musical and cultural lectures, poolside performances and music classes for guests who want to learn how to play the instrument.
