Holland America Line’s flagship ms Amsterdam cruised out of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., Saturday, Jan. 4, 2014, on the 55th Grand World Voyage for the company.

Guests started arriving at Port Everglades Pier #26 at 10 a.m. and I greeted them along with Hotel Director Henk Mensink and Cruise Director Gene Young.

We were slightly overshadowed as guests reunited with fellow guests that they hadn’t seen since the 2013 Grand World Voyage! It was most definitely “old home day” as guests greeted each other looking forward the following 113 days they would be together! The energy in the pier was electrifying as guests proceeded through embarkation onto the ms Amsterdam.

The pier was decorated from stem to stern including a welcoming “Bon Voyage” sign engulfed with tropical flowers that greeted guests as they first arrived in the terminal.

  1. These are wonderful photos to see on the HALBlog. All those smiling faces, and with very good reason: 113 glorious days on a beautiful ship with superior HAL service, excellent food, wonderful ports and relaxing sea days with many special events.

Thanks to Mr Bernhoft and the Mariner Society for taking such good care of their Mariners. You keep us returning to HAL cruise after cruise!

  2. Thanks for the photographs at embarkation time. Oh to be onboard again for one of the sectors. Last year was fantastic. When will Capt. Jonathan Mercer start his wonderful blogs again. I so enjoyed reading them before joining the vessel in Hong Kong.
Good sailing to all on AMSTERDAM>

  3. Always love reading your blog. The pictures brought back such wonderful memories of sailing day January 04 2113,as it was just as you wrote- a wonderful reunion of friends we made the year before on the 2012 World Voyage Cannot wait to rejoin the ship on March3 in Hong Kong. Glad to see Henk is back again, but where is Bruce? Dolly looks wonderful and can’t wait to meet up with her again.

  4. Hi Julie,

Thanks for your reply. Glad to hear that Capt Mercer is back in blogging mode. His stories really are great to read for the armchair traveller and those interested in cruising. Sorry could not do a HAL this year, going with competition P&O for nostalgic reasons (also in Carnival Group) but who knows maybe next year if our currency does not hit rock bottom. Looking forward to seeing Amsterdam in Cape Town in April. Would be great if my travelling companion from our cruise last year from Hong Kong to Cape Town could get onboard for a look around!

    Best Regards

    Ted Dixon (Cape Town)

  5. Please advise where I can get more information about lengthy cruises like this one.
    Thank you,
    Mary Slade

  6. Can’t wait for the Captain to begin his blog. I followed on the 2013 cruise and put it in my favorites so I can just click on it to read the latest blog. Hoping to someday be on one of the World Cruises too. Meanwhile I will cruise vicariously through all the blogs.
