While docked in Florida the other day, we had a visit from the Dutch Club of South Florida. Our guest of honor was the Consul General from The Netherlands.

My wife and I dined in the Tamarind Restaurant aboard the Nieuw Amsterdam on March 3rd. We were blown away with the decor, the service, the atmosphere, but most of all the food. Every dish, whether it was a salad, appetizer or main dish, was full of flavors we had never tasted before. Each bite was savored and enjoyed. On top of that, the presentation was beauty to behold. — Ed

You must have a million images of the Tamarind Restaurant but it was one of my favorite areas of the ship, not to mention one of the best meals. I am still thinking of the tempura ice cream.

Travel Journalist and co-creator of CruiseReport.com Chris Dikman is currently sailing on Nieuw Amsterdam and will be sending in cruise diaries during his voyage.

Cruise ship dining is evolving. Gone are the days of eating in the same dining room each evening with the same group of folks. Unless, of course, you choose to. Modern cruise ships, at least the larger ships, offer a variety of dining choices, cuisines and venues. Holland America Line is leading this effort with some innovative dining concepts. Certainly, one of the most innovative is Tamarind, an Asian fusion restaurant found on Nieuw Amsterdam and Eurodam. We were impressed with the Asian restaurant on Eurodam back in 2008, so we were anxious to try Tamarind on Nieuw Amsterdam.

Tamarind is located on deck 11 amidships just across from The Silk Den lounge. The restaurant is open for lunch on most days and dinner each evening. There is a $15 per person service charge for dinner, no charge for lunch. Reservations are required for dinner.
